JOHN D. LONG
As a Member of Congress, he writes to a young Republican, praising their Party
Autograph Letter signed: "John D. Long" as U. S. Representative, 1 page, 7½x9¾. Washington, D. C., 1887 February 8. On personal Congressional letterhead to "Jos. P. Fisher, Esq.", in full: "I regret that my engagements have prevented my accepting your kind invitation to the Republican Club dinner in N. Y., in the 12th instant. I am heartily in sympathy with the movement of the Young Republicans, which it is intended to promote. With a good record in the past, with right purposes for its future, with candidates and platforms abreast with its own prestige, and with the support of young men, such as your club, the Republican Party will win because it will deserve to win. Truly yours". John Davis Long (1838-1915) followed his terms in the state legislature (1875-1878) with service as Lieutenant Governor (1879) and Governor (1880-1882) of Massachusetts, then went to Washington as a U.S. Representative (1883-1889). He was Secretary of the Navy under Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt (1897-1902). A capable Secretary, Long helped prepare the US Navy for its success in the Spanish-American War and its further expansion under President Roosevelt. Normal mailing folds. Binding holes along left edge. Creased and tone. Edges worn, tears on right and left sides. Otherwise, fine condition.
