As Governor of Massachusetts, he apologizes for forgetting to send a manuscript, and believes he has now thrown it away.
Autograph Letter signed: "John D. Long", 1 page, 5¼x8¼. Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Department, 1882 April 21. On official letterhead to "Dear Mr. Joy [?], in full: "It is too bad. I did forget my intention to send you my MSS; and now I cannot find it. I probably threw it away. But I lecture to point. Believe me not forgetful of you, but that I am truly yours" [signature]. Additional note in his hand at top edge: "Please see me about the lecture some noon time." John D. Long (1838-1915) followed his terms in the state legislature (1875-1878) with service as Lieutenant Governor (1879) and Governor (1880-1882) of Massachusetts, then went to Washington as a U.S. Representative (1883-1889). He was Secretary of the Navy under Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt (1897-1902). A capable Secretary, Long helped prepare the US Navy for its success in the Spanish-American War and its further expansion under President Roosevelt. Normal mailing folds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Signature slightly haloed on 'g' on 'Long'. Otherwise, fine condition.
