JOHN D. LONG
Letter apologizing for misidentifying a portrait hanging in the Derby Academy.
Autograph Letter signed: "John D. Long", 5½x9. Boston, 1910 December 21. On personal letterhead. To "Mr. N. O. Tilsbin/Southampton". In full: "I find I was in error in writing you that Captain Richard Derby's portrait is in our Derby Academy. It is a portrait of Madame Derby's first husband Dr. Hersey. Truly yours". John Davis Long (1838-1915) followed his terms in the state legislature (1875-1878) with service as Lieutenant Governor (1879) and Governor (1880-1882) of Massachusetts, then went to Washington as a U.S. Representative (1883-1889). He was Secretary of the Navy under Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt (1897-1902). A capable Secretary, Long helped prepare the US Navy for its success in the Spanish-American War and its further expansion under President Roosevelt. The Derby Academy, the oldest co-educational school in the US, was founded with an endowment by Mrs. Sarah (Hersey) Derby, the wife of a wealthy Salem merchant. The private academy, located in Hingham, Massachusetts, continues to serve students in grades K-8. Normal mailing folds. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower margin. Fine condition.
