On stationery of his law firm, he sends regrets that he cannot attend a
Republican Lincoln Day dinner.
Autograph Letter signed: "John D. Long", 1 page, 6x9¼. Boston, 1888
December 31. On letterhead of the Law Office of Allen, Long and Hemenway to
R. D. Berwick, in full: "I beg to acknowledge receipt of your kind
invitation to the dinner in honor of Lincoln to be given by the Brooklyn Rep.
League. I regret that I cannot accept it, as I have engagements for that date,
but I desire to thank you very heartily and to send my best wishes. Very truly
yours". John D. Long (1838-1915) followed his terms in the
state legislature (1875-1878) with service as Lieutenant Governor
(1879) and Governor (1880-1882) of Massachusetts, then went to
Washington as a U.S. Representative (1883-1889). He was Secretary of the
Navy under Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt (1897-1902). A capable
Secretary, Long helped prepare the US Navy for its success in the
Spanish-American War and its further expansion under President Roosevelt.
Multiple mailing folds. Page slightly seperating on folds. Corners lightly worn
and creased. Lightly toned. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Light surface
creases. Ink slightly smeared in one place. Otherwise, fine
condition.
