[JOHN DALY]
Handsome head shot of the distinguished broadcast journalist best known as the moderator of What's My Line?
Photograph, unsigned. B/w, 4x5. Name written (unknown hand) on suit. John Daly (1914-1991), born John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly in Johannesburg, South Africa, is best known as the only moderator of the successful quiz show, What's My Line? (1950-1967), although he had a long and distinguished career in broadcast news. Daly, who had been the first (on CBS radio) to report on the bombing of Pearl Harbor, was correspondent during WWII. Covering General George S. Patton in Italy, he was present at the time of the infamous "slapping incident". Daly would become a featured reporter on CBS Radio's You Are There program (1947-1950), before going on to serve as Vice President in charge of News, Special Events and Public Affairs at ABC Television, receiving three Peabody Awards during his tenure. Daly, who made his television debut as a panelist on The Eyes Have It (1948), would appear on several TV series as well as news programs, winning an Emmy Award in 1955 for Best News Reporter or Commentator (he was nominated for five additional Emmys) and a Golden Globe in 1962 for Best TV Star - Male. Daly also appeared as himself in two feature films, Bye Bye Birdie (1963) and Muhammad Ali, the Greatest (1969). Lightly creased at blank margins and corners. Surface creased, some at facial image. Overall, fine condition.
