JOHN-DAVID F. BARTOE Envelope signed by the astronaut celebrating the successful transportation of the space shuttle Columbia over land Commemorative Envelope Signed: “John-David F. Bartoe” in blue ink underneath printed image of the Columbia being transported by a Bowing 747 in the air. 6½x3¾. Postmarked March 8, 1979. Typed note reads in full: “The Space Shuttle Columbia transported over-land arrives at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The space shuttle was then mated to a 747 carrier aircraft to be flown to Kennedy Space Center, Florida.” Astrophysicist John-David F. Bartoe (b. 1944) was a payload specialist on STS-51-F, conducting two solar physics experiments during this Spacelab 2 mission. Previously, he published over 60 papers concerning solar physics at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, the District of Columbia (1966-1988). He is currently Research Manager for the International Space Station at the Johnson Space Flight Center. Name written in unknown hand on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
