Inscribed to popular West Coast radio personality George Sanders. Actor,
director, producer, cinematographer and writer JOHN DEREK (1926-1998),
who made his film debut in 1944, appeared in such features as All the
King's Men (1949), Mask of the Avenger (1951), The Ten
Commandments (1956), Exodus (1960) and Nightmare in the
Sun (1965). Derek was also seen on the small screen in the TV
miniseries, Flair (1990), as well as in guest appearances on several
series, from Lux Video Theatre (1954) to Frontier Circus (1962).
At the 1981 RAZZIE Awards, Derek was nominated for his direction of
Tarzan, The Ape Man, which starred his fourth wife, Bo Derek.
He was married to four actresses, Pati Behrs (1951-1957),
Ursula Andress (1957-1966), Linda Evans (1968-1974) and Bo Derek
(1974 until his death); he photographed the latter three wives for "Playboy"
magazine pictorials. In 1955, ART MOONEY (1911-1993) and his orchestra
returned to the pop charts with his composition, "Honey Babe", which was
featured in the MGM film, Battle Cry. The song spent more than four
months on the best sellers charts, reaching No. 5. Later that year,
his song, "Nuttin' for Christmas", was recorded by seven-year-old Barry
Gordon and became a big seller that holiday season. Mooney recorded his most
popular hit, "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover" in 1948, the same year he
released another hit, "Baby Face". Mooney, who appeared in two films,
Film Vodvil: Art Mooney and his Orchestra (1946) and The Opposite
Sex (1956), continued to record for MGM in the late 1950s. Performer,
composer, arranger and producer WAYNE SHANKLIN (1916-1970) had his
biggest hit with "Jezebel", which was recorded by Frankie Laine. Shanklin's
other hits include "Chanson d'Amour" and "Primrose Lane". His songs have been
featured in a number of films, including I, Madman (1989), Primary
Colors (1998), Final Rinse (1999) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
George R. Sanders, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV
interview host, first in Los Angeles and later in Portland. Lightly creased.
Light show through of writing. Rectangular show through on front touches one
word of Derek's inscription, show through on verso at the "lin" of Shanklin and
three words of his writing (all legible). Both sides are numbered (likely in
Sanders' hand) at lower corners. Irregular left edge from removal from bound
book. Otherwise, fine condition.
