JOHN DREW, JR. Bold signature of the American actor on a 3x2 card Signature: "John Drew/1906", in black ink, 3x2. John Drew, Jr. (1853-1927), the eldest son of American Shakespearean actors John Drew (1827-1862) and Louisa Lane Drew, made his acting debut in Philadelphia in 1873 under the management of his mother. (He was born John Drew, Jr., but did not use the suffix; his father had died when he was nine). By 1879, Drew was the leading man in Augustin Daly's Company and was equally popular with audiences and caricaturists. Drew, who was best known for his characterization of Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, made his Broadway debut in 1902 (The Mummy and the Humming Bird) and appeared in numerous plays on the Great White Way until 1927. His sister, Georgiana, married Maurice Barrymore and was the mother of actors Lionel, Ethel and John Barrymore. Drew acted with his niece and nephews at the Waldorf-Astoria in the 1890s. The year he signed this card, Drew starred in His House in Order at New York's Empire Theatre. Left edge frayed. Corners slightly worn. Lightly toned. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
