Although he had appeared in 80 low-budget films, Wayne did not become a star until 1939, when he appeared as the Ringo Kid in John Ford's Stagecoach. Near the end of his 40-year career, Wayne was honored with his only Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of hard-drinking, one-eyed Marshal Rooster Cogburn in 1969's True Grit. Character actor GEORGE "GABBY" HAYES (1885-1969) was best known as the side-kick to a number of movie stars, beginning with John Wayne in 1933 Lone Star Westerns. He then starred with William Boyd ("Hopalong Cassidy) before going to Republic Pictures, where he was side-kick to Roy Rogers in a number of feature films. Hayes later starred on his own Saturday morning television show, The Gabby Hayes Show. MARTHA SCOTT (1912-2003), who made her professional debut playing Shakespeare at the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair, made her Broadway bow in 1938 in Our Town. Reprising her role in the 1940 film version, Scott received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Scott made a number of feature films, appearing as Charlton Heston's mother in both The Ten Commandments (1955) and Ben-Hur (1959), and in Sayonara (1957), Airport 1975 (1974) and The Turning Point (1977). She was also a frequent performer on television, appearing in several made-for-TV movies and on the series The Bob Newhart Show (1972, 1974-1977), Dallas and Murder, She Wrote (1987). ALBERT DEKKER (1904-1968), who began his career as a stage actor, made his film debut in 1937 in The Great Garrick. Usually cast as a villain, he starred in Dr. Cyclops (1940) and also appeared in films including Wake Island (1942), East of Eden (1955) and Suddenly, Last Summer (1959). Dekker also appeared in a number of TV movies and series. RUTH TERRY (born 1920) was a leading lady at Republic Pictures, starring in such films as The Affairs of Jimmy Valentine (1943), My Buddy (1944) and Steppin' in Society and The Cheaters (both 1945). She retired in the mid-40s, but returned to the screen in 1962 in Hand of Death. Lightly creased. Folds, upper horizontal fold touches the "J" and "h" of John and the "W" of Wayne and the "h" of Martha, lower horizontal fold touches the "H" and descender of the "y" in Hayes' signature, mid-vertical fold touches the "th" of Martha in Scott's signature. Soiled at mid-vertical fold, chipped at upper right blank edge at upper horizontal fold. Overall, fine condition.
