Washington, D.C. Dear Rep. Moss: I am preparing for publication a collection of philosophical, inspirational and humorous quotations to be nationally distributed. I would like your permission to use the quote attributed to you, to be used in the following manner: The American people should be reminded every now and then just how fortunate our country is to have a free press, and what the existence of thousands of newspapers means to our cherished freedom. Rep. John E. Moss. It would be published as shown above. If you do not hold the copyright on this material, would you please forward this request to the proper copyright holder, then to be returned to me. An early reply would be appreciated. Sincerely, Theron C. Liddle. Reprint approval granted John E. Moss, M.C." JOHN EMERSON MOSS (1915-1997) was an American politician of the Democratic Party who is well remembered for his championing of the federal Freedom of Information Act through multiple sessions of the United States House of Representatives, where he served from 1953 to 1979. He also had an active role in furthering legislative oversight, chairing hearings related to the World Uranium Cartel, FBI foreign security surveillance during the Vietnam War, abuse in federal contracting, defensive medicine, pricing and supply of natural gas, passive restraints systems for passenger cars, regulation of pesticides and amendments to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. John E. Moss is considered the father of modern legislative oversight and on May 1, 1973 he was also the first to call for the House to set up procedures for a bill of impeachment during the Watergate scandal. THERON LIDDLE was the managing editor of "Deseret News" Salt Lake City who published a series of books called A Thought For Today, with quotations by famous people. Lightly toned. Sealed.
