JOHN CUST, EARL OF BROWNLOW I
The Tory politician signs his name on this fragment taken from the front cover of an
Autograph Letter Fragment Signed: “Grantham Feby Fourteenth 1826/ Miss Bellen/ Whittleser/
Isle of Ely/ Free/ Brownlow” 5¼x2¾. Dated February 14, 1826. John Cust (1779-1853) was a
member of the British peerage and a Tory. Elected as a Member of Parliament for
Clitheroe in 1802, Cust occupied the seat until 1807, when he succeeded his father's title.
Also, in 1805, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Toned. Irregularly cut along top
edge. Top of letters of writing have been clipped off. Ink note from a collector written
underneath letter fragment. Otherwise, fine condition.
