JOHN WODEHOUSE, 1ST EARL OF KIMBERLEY The 1st Earl of Kimberley who served in a number of British political offices signed this handwritten letter and sent it to Ms. Philpot Autograph Letter Signed: “Kimberley” in iron gall ink. 4½x7 (when folded in half). Three pages. Dated April 30, 1882. Sent to Ms. Philpot. In Full: “I bear in mind that you take an interest in Colonel Harley: + I am glad to give him the opportunity of temporary employment in British Honduras - you will quite understand that I can say nothing as to the future, as there are many more candidates for employment than offices available. Very faithfully yours”. John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley (1826-1902), was appointed an Earl in 1866. After attending Eton and Christ Church, he graduated with a classics degree in 1847. He went on to work intermittently from 1852-1861 under Lord Aberdeen and Lord Palmerston as the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs. This professional experience gave him leverage towards various Foreign Affairs positions, including envoy to Russia (1856-1858), Under-Secretary of State for India (1864), and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1865-1866). In the latter office, he had to handle the newly-created organizations of Fenians, institutions that pushed for the creation of an independent Irish Republic. He was appointed the Chancellor of the University of London in 1899. Minor stains and smudging. Notes in unknown hand in pencil on verso and first page. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
