JOHN EDMUND READE
The English poet and novelist pens a letter expressing his regret that he can't be in town at a particular time due to the illness of a relative
Autograph Letter signed: “John Edm Reade” in iron gall ink, 1p, 4½x7¼. Letter is affixed to similarly-sized light blue piece of card stock. To “Sir”. In part:Be advised that I…most willingly could I be in town on the fourth: the serious illness of a dear relative renders it impossible…”. John Edmund Reade (1800-1870) was a poet and novelist who received his education in Doulting. Over the course of his literary career, he was oftentimes criticized for plagiarizing the works of his well-known literary forebears. He most frequently borrowed from Lord Byron, but he also took from Scott and Wordsworth, among others. However, he did earn praise from Goethe for his poem “Cain, the Wanderer”. A few of his publications include The Broken Heart (1825), The Revolt of the Angels (1830), and Saturday Sterne (1862). Left edge of letter irregular. Heavily toned. Creasing from adhesion to card stock. Sparse staining and foxing throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
