director John Erskine to the wife of violinist Paul Kochanski, one of
Juilliard's faculty
Autograph envelope signed "John Erskine" on flap. Apartment
number added to address in pencil in unknown hand. 5½x3½. Postmarked New York
City Feb. 10, 1934. Addressed in Erskine's hand to "Mrs. Paul
Kochanski/145 East 74th Street/City". One 3-cent purple-and-white NRA "In a
Common Determination" stamp affixed. PAUL KOCHANSKI (1887-1934) was a classical
violinist and a teacher at Julliard. Poet, essayist and novelist JOHN
ERSKINE (1879-1951) published his first novel, The Private Life of
Helen of Troy, in 1925. A professor of literature at Columbia University,
Erskine initiated an honors course in classic texts, greatly influencing
ideas of general education in the U. S. His most famous essay was titled
The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent. A composer and music
critic, Erskine also served as first President of the Juilliard School of
Music (1928-1937). Envelope is open and empty. Lightly toned, soiled and
creased. Left ½-inch torn from flap, adhering to letter. Stains from adhesive on
verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
