Author and educator John Erskine wrote this letter of thanks on his personalized stationery in 1931.
Autograph letter signed "John". 1 page, 5½x8½,1 sheet folded, on Erskine's personalized stationery. Sept. 28, 1931.In full: "Dear [illegible]: The flowers are still fresh in the beautiful vase, and I am so grateful to you and Paul for your friendship, and for the charming gifts with which you greeted my new year in the new building. You both have given me many happy hours, and I like to look forward to long years of comradeship with the rarest of friends. Thanks, and thanks! Faithfully". Poet, essayist and novelist Erskine (1879-1951) published his first novel, The Private Life of Helen of Troy, in 1925. A professor of literature at Columbia University, Erskine initiated an honors course in classic texts, greatly influencing ideas of general education in the U. S. His most famous essay was titled The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent. A composer and music critic, Erskine also served as first President of the Julliard School of Music (1928-1937). Light creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
