b/w 2¼x3¼ printed photo affixed
Photograph mount signed "John Erskine". Blue ink border around
photo, drawn in unknown hand. 3¼x5¼ card with b/w 2¼x3¼ printed photo affixed.
Poet, essayist and novelist Erskine (1879-1951) published his first
novel, The Private Life of Helen of Troy, in 1925. A professor of
literature at Columbia University, Erskine initiated an honors course in
classic texts, greatly influencing ideas of general education in the U. S.
His most famous essay was titled The Moral Obligation To Be
Intelligent. A composer and music critic, Erskine also served as
first President of the Juilliard School of Music (1928-1937). Lightly
toned and bowed. Edges of card are lightly discolored (does not touch
signature). Mounting adhesive slightly visible on right edge of photo. Otherwise
in fine condition.
