JOHN ERSKINE
Author and educator John Erskine signed this letter, typed on his personalized stationery, in 1937 to catch up with a friend.
Typed letter signed "John". Pencil notations at top edge and red pencil mark at right edge in unknown hand. 1 page, 8¼x11, on Erskine's personalized stationery. July 28, 1937. Addressed to Pirie MacDonald, Esq. New Canaan, Connecticut. In full: "Dear Ian It's been so long since I have had news of you that I must pursue you with a letter, and beg you or some member of the family to let me know how you are getting on. When I last saw you, you were in such fine shape that I don't worry about you at all. It's really a bit of friendly gossip that I am after. I improve steadily, and I have moved downstairs to my larger apartment where I am completely comfortable. Graham made use very proud the other day by carrying off a Doctor's degree in Architecture from the University of Rome. He is sailing for home on the 1st. My love to you and the household!" Poet, essayist and novelist Erskine (1879-1951) published his first novel, The Private Life of Helen of Troy, in 1925. A professor of literature at Columbia University, Erskine initiated an honors course in classic texts, greatly influencing ideas of general education in the U. S. His most famous essay was titled The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent. A composer and music critic, Erskine also served as first President of the Julliard School of Music (1928-1937). Lightly toned, stained and creased. Pencil mark touches body of letter but nor siganture. ¾x½ hole in top left corner, with tape repair on verso. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
