Typed letter signed "John Erskine". 1 page, 8½x11, on stationery of the Office of the President at the Juilliard School of Music. November 12, 1928. Addressed to Sterling Baer, Esq. at Charles Scribner's Sons, New York City. In full: "Dear Mr. Baer Your letter of October 31 greeted me on my return. Thank you many times for what you wrote about the new book. I prize your opinion, and am much encouraged by what you say. With cordial regards, faithfully yours". Lightly toned and creased. Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned original mailing envelope from Juilliard School of Music stationery. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. Postmarked Grand Central Station, New York, Nov. 13, 1928. Addressed to Sterling Baer, Esq. at Charles Scribner's Sons, New York City. One 2-cent red-and-white stamp affixed. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Torn open at right edge. This letter is possibly in reference to Erskine's book The Delight Of Great Books, which was released in 1928. Poet, essayist and novelist Erskine (1879-1951) published his first novel, The Private Life of Helen of Troy, in 1925. A professor of literature at Columbia University, Erskine initiated an honors course in classic texts, greatly influencing ideas of general education in the U. S. His most famous essay was titled The Moral Obligation To Be Intelligent. A composer and music critic, Erskine also served as first President of the Julliard School of Music (1928-1937).
