Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/ John F. Shaforth/
U.S.S./ Colorado" in black ink. 4½x2¼, affixed to piece of dark green
cardstock. Politician John F. Shafroth (1854-1922) served as a United
States Representative and Senator, as well as governor of Colorado. After
studying to be a lawyer, he moved to Denver in 1879, where he served as city
attorney before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for a
term, and later resigning in favor of his fairly-elected opponent, earning
the nickname "Honest John". Shafroth was elected Governor of Colorado in 1908
and is best remembered for his passing of Colorado's ballot initiatives; and
later elected to the U.S. Senate in 1912 where he served as chairman of the
Committee on Pacific Islands and Puerto Rico, and the leading Senate sponsor of
the Jones-Shafroth Act which granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans. Toned.
