JOHN FISKE
Historian and philosopher John Fiske wrote this letter from
Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1891. It accompanied a preface and a table of
contents for a book; Fiske apologized for not sending it earlier, as "I was
moving about so incessantly that all my correspondence fell sadly into
arrears".
Autograph letter signed "John Fiske" in purple ink. 1 page,
4½x6¾, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Cambridge, Massachusetts, May 5,
1891. Addressed C. E. L. Wingate, Esq. In full: "Dear Sir: Pray
excuse the delay in answering your letter. It reached me somewhere out West,
while I was moving about so incessantly that all my correspondence fell sadly
into arrears. I enclose proof of Preface & Contents, which may be of some
service if not too late. Yrs sincerely". Fiske (1842-1901) was an
American historian and philosopher and a leading interpreter and
supporter of Darwin's theory of evolution, applying it to his
optimistic theory of inevitable historical progress. His works include:
Darwinism and Other Essays (1879), Excursions of an Evolutionist
(1884), and A Century of Science and Other Essays (1899). Lightly creased
and worn at corners. Tape remnant on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine
condition.
