book Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy - "We are not the autocrats, but
the servants and interpreters of Nature" - on this small card in purple ink.
Accompanied by front panel of original mailing envelope.
Autograph quotation signed: "John Fiske," 1p, 3¼x2¼ gilt-edged card. In full: "We are not the
autocrats,/but the servants and/interpreters of Nature." Fiske
(1842-1901) was an American historian and philosopher and a
leading interpreter and supporter of Darwin's theory of evolution,
applying it to his optimistic theory of inevitable historical
progress. His works include: Darwinism and Other Essays (1879),
Excursions of an Evolutionist (1884), and A Century of Science and
Other Essays (1899). Lightly toned and soiled. Adhesive residue on verso (no
show-through). Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by a front panel of
envelope: Postmarked "Jun 11", no year from "Cambridge Sta. Mass." Addressed in
Fiske's hand: "Mrs. Henry G. Allen/146 South Lafayette St./Grand Rapids./Mich".
Torn at upper left and lower right corners, mounting stains on verso. Card has
mounting remnants on verso, but is clean and fine on front.
