JOHN FORSYTH
The Secretary of State writes to Nathaniel S. Benton, informing him of his appointment as Attorney of the U.S. for the Northern District of New York
Autograph letter signed: "John Forsyth", 1 page, 8x9¾. February 25, 1839. Department of State. In full [some typed]: "Sir: The President having, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, appointed you Attorney of the U.S. for the Northern District of New York, I herewith enclose you commission. You will be pleased to inform this Department of the receipt of it, and, should it be, accepted, of the name of the State or Country in which you were born. I am, Sir, Respectfully, Your obedient servant". John Forsyth (1780-1841) served as Jackson's and Van Buren's Secretary of State from July 1, 1834 until March 3, 1841. He had previously served as U.S. Representative (1813-1818, 1823-1827), U.S. Senator (1818-1819, 1829-1834) and Governor of Georgia (1827-1829). As U.S. Minister to Spain, Forsyth gained King Ferdinand VII's ratification of the Treaty of 1819, which ceded Florida to the United States. Nathaniel S. Benton (1792-1869), an attorney and politician, served in the position of Attorney of the U.S. for the Northern District of New York from 1931 to 1941, despite being "appointed" in this document in 1939. Multiple folds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Heavily toned. Edges worn. Small tears at folds. Lightly soiled. Surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
