He signs a typed letter discussing plans to travel to Hollywood.
Typed Letter signed: "Love/John", 1 page, 5¾x8. Paris, France, 1972 March 13. On letterhead of John Frankenheimer Productions to Edward Lewis, Columbia Pictures, Hollywood, California, USA. In full: "Cancel Belair House for 17th. I'm staying at Bryson's house. The only thing that we need now is a car!!! Can you promote one in running order for 10 days?" Director John Frankenheimer (1930-2002) started making films in the Air Force during the Korean War. In the 1950s, he directed 140 TV episodes, including many TV playhouse presentations. His most critically acclaimed films for the big screen came in the 1960s and 1970s, including The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May and The Train. By his own admission, his productivity diminished after the relative failure of Black Sunday (1979), but he made a strong comeback in made for TV movies in the nineties, including the Turner Network features Andersonville and George Wallace. Producer Edward Lewis, who had worked with Frankenheimer on other films, including Seven Days in May (1964), was at the date of this letter working with him on the 1973 film version of Eugene O'Neill's play, The Iceman Cometh. The Bryson with whom Frankenheimer planned to stay was probably celebrity photographer John Bryson (d. 2005), who had played himself in Frankenheimer's 1966 film Grand Prix.
