JOHN F.W. HERSCHEL The English intellectual who named eleven moons in our solar system signed this letter written on his behalf Manuscript Letter Signed: "J.F.W. Herschel", 2p, 7½x9½. Collingwood, Hawkhurst Kent, 1847 December 23. To R. Owen Esqr. M.D. In Part: "Lord Auckland has requested me to officiate as Editor in respect of a Manual of Scientific desiderata and queries to be placed in the hands of Officers employed in Surveying and Exploring Expeditions and on other Similar Services in which useful information may be collected, as well in Her Majesty's as in the Mercantile Service…." Herschel then asks Owen "to undertake a set of Instructions for observation &c in the department of Zoology". British astronomer Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) pioneered celestial photography and carried out research on photo-active chemicals and the wave theory of light. During his career he named nearly a dozen moons in our solar system and introduced the use of the Julian day system for astronomical purposes. In 1840, anatomist and palaeontologist Richard Owen (1804-1892) contributed to Darwin's Zoology of the Beagle. Lord Auckland (1784-1849) was George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland, First Lord of the Admiralty. Folds, vertical fold touches the first "e" in Herschel. Lightly shaded at mid-horizontal fold and upper blank edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
