Biography signed: "JG Carlisle", 1p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C. 1909 October 6. Carbon typed biography for inclusion in the 1910-1911 Who's Who in America. Carisle has filled out blanks for the names of his parents, the birthplace and birthdate of his wife and he has written his address in Washington, D.C. He notes that he began his present occupation: "Atty at law Feby. 1858". Edits in red ink (unknown hand) at some information. John G. Carlisle (1834-1910) represented Kentucky in the House of Representatives as a Democrat from 1877-1890, serving as Speaker of the House from 1883-1889. He was U.S. Senator from 1890 to 1893, when he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Cleveland. Carlisle was noted for his sound money policy and tariff reform and served during Cleveland's entire second term. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "G" of signature. Nicked and torn at edges, ½-tears at the "G" and the "i" of Carlisle. Blue pencil mark (unknown hand) at 2 lines of writing. Red pencil number and stamp at upper margins. Nailhead-size hole at upper portion, touching imprinted text, upper and lower right blank corners torn away.
