Attorney General Sargent writes with regard to "what every college man should be"
Typed Letter Signed: "John G. Sargent" as Coolidge's Attorney General, 2p, separate sheets, 8x10½. Washington, 1925 March 24. To Mr. Cornelius Greenway, Tufts College, Mass. In part: "As an alumnus of Tufts College, and in response to your kind invitation to extend a message of greeting to the seniors of the institution upon the occasion of their annual class banquet, I am happy to meet your wishes...." He then writes his message, in part: "The one thought and ambition of every college man should be to be a public official without vice, a private citizen without wrong, a neighbor without reproach, a Christian without hyprocracy (sic), a man without guile, submissive to law, obedient to authority, thoughtful, kind, and, above all, loyal to country and self...." He concludes: "I am sorry that the pressure of my new duties prevent me being present with you". John G. Sargent (1860-1939), a graduate of Tufts College, served as State Attorney General of Vermont from 1900-1902 and 1908-1912. He was appointed U.S. Attorney General on March 18, 1925 and served in the Coolidge Cabinet until March 5, 1929, succeeding Harlan F. Stone who had been appointed to the Supreme Court. After leaving Washington, he served and chairman of the Vermont Commission on Uniform State Laws and was a trustee of the Black River Academy. Lightly creased. Light type transfer. 1/16-inch tear at top left corner on signature page (all intact).
