Coolidge's Attorney General writes to Congressman Fred A. Britten acknowledging receipt of a letter and complying with the letter's request to send an autographed letter to a Mr. Madlener.
Typed Letter Signed: "John G. Sargent" as Attorney General, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, 1927 December 22. On letterhead of The Attorney General addressed to Hon. Fred A. Britten, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. In full: "My dear Mr. Congressman: I acknowledge receipt of your letter of December 21st and take pleasure in advising you that I have complied with your request and have sent Mr. Madlener an autographed letter. [Not included] Sincerely yours," John G. Sargent (1860-1939), a graduate of Tufts College, served as State Attorney General of Vermont from 1900-1902 and 1908-1912. He was appointed U.S. Attorney General on March 18, 1925 and served in the Coolidge Cabinet until March 5, 1929, succeeding Harlan F. Stone who had been appointed to the Supreme Court. After leaving Washington, he served and chairman of the Vermont Commission on Uniform State Laws and was a trustee of the Black River Academy. Frederick A. Britten (1871-1946) served as a Republican Congressman for Illinois from 1913 to 1935. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
