Signature: "John G. Sawyer/Albion/N.Y." in iron gall ink. 7x2. John Gilbert Sawyer (1825-1898) was a U.S. Congressman from New York who attended the common schools and Millville Academy. He was Superintendent of schools for Orleans County, New York from 1848 to 1851and after he graduated as a lawyer he started practicing in Albion and was Justice of the Peace of Barre, New York from 1851 to 1862. He served as prosecuting attorney of Orleans County 1862-1865 and served as judge and surrogate of Orleans County 1867-1883; he also served as delegate to several Republican State conventions. John Sawyer was elected as a Republican to the 49th, 50th and 51st Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1891) and served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Navy. He was not a candidate for re-nomination in 1890 and resumed the practice of his profession in Albion and is interred in Mount Albion Cemetery. Lightly toned. Irregular cut.
