Publicity photograph for the 1947 20th Century-Fox film, Gentleman's
Agreement, in which Garfield gave what many consider his finest performance
as Dave Goldman. The film, directed by Elia Kazan, starred Gregory Peck and
Dorothy McGuire and co-starred Celeste Holm, June Havoc and Dean Stockwell.
In the year this film was released, Garfield was nominated for a Best Actor
Academy Award for Body and Soul. He had previously been nominated
for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1938 for Four Daughters. John
Garfield (1913-1952), born Jacob Julius Garfinkel, was one of the most
respected dramatic actors of the 1930s and 1940s. His other film credits
include The Sea Wolf (1941), Tortilla Flat (1942), Pride of the
Marines (1945), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) and Force of
Evil (1948). Ink slightly smudged at the "G" and "d" in Good. Lightly
creased at margins. Minor surface striations (not evident head on), minor
surface scratches (not evident head on), 1 touching the flourish beneath
signature. Overall, fine condition.
