Signature: "John Gary Evans/Spartanburg/S.C.", 5x3 piece of
paper, affixed to a 5x3 piece of black cardstock (2 surfaces). John Gary
Evans (1863-1942), the son of a Confederate general, entered the South
Carolina legislature at age 25 as a supporter of populist Democrat "Pitchfork"
Ben Tillman. He was South Carolina's Governor (1894-1897), presiding over
the State's Constitutional Convention of 1895. A US Army major during the
Spanish American War, he helped establish civil government in Cuba. Although he
failed four times in bids for the US Senate, he was influential in Democratic
Party politics, serving as State Party Chairman (1918-1928) and Democratic
National Committeman. Adhesive residue at corners, and center (lightly affecting
