J.G. Lockhart" in faded black ink. 4½x2, affixed to piece of white

author, best known for his definitive biography of Sir Walter Scott titled
Life of Sir Walter Scott (1837-1838), which is considered the
second most admirable in the English language (after Boswell's Life of
Johnson). A scholar of classics, Lockhart first came into notice while
writing for the Scottish Tory publication Blackwood's Magazine, famed for
its aggressive articles and brilliant criticism of the Scottish Whig stronghold
and the Romantic intellectual movement. In 1818, Lockhart met Sir Walter Scott,
and went on to marry his eldest daughter Sofia two years later. He worked as
editor of the Quarterly Review from 1825 until 1853, as well as wrote
novels such as Valerius (1821), Reginald Dalton
(1823) and Matthew Wald (1824) and served as editor for the
famed Murray's Family Library (1829). Irregularly cut. Soiled and
slightly worn. Small stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
