Glenn, Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. Aboard Friendship 7, the 40-year-old Mercury astronaut completed three orbits in 88 minutes and 29 seconds, traveling 75,679 statute miles. Over 36 years later, 77-year-old Senator Glenn was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-95), October 29 to November 7, 1998, a nine-day mission during which the seven-person crew supported a variety of research payloads including investigations on space flight and the aging process. Glenn served four terms as a Democratic Senator from Ohio (1975-1999) and sought his Party's Presidential nomination in 1984. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001).
