the Earth and oldest man in space in a suit and tie behind a globe.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best regards/to Johanna/J H
Glenn, Jr." B/w, 8x10. NASA photograph taken in 1964. On February 20,
1962, Mercury astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth
(three orbits, 4 hours 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. Glenn was
then grounded by President John F. Kennedy, who wanted to protect the national
hero. Thirty-six years later, on October 29, 1998, Glenn, a U.S. Senator
from Ohio, returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. At
77, the oldest man in space spent nine days on the mission, orbiting the
Earth 134 times. Glenn's participation enabled scientists to study the effects
of space on the aging process. Fine condition.
