As U.S. Senator, he returns to space after 36 years.
Photograph signed: "John Glenn". Color, 8x10 overall, image 6¼x9½ (one surface). After Glenn's 1962 Mercury flight and given his hero status, President Kennedy ordered NASA not to employ Glenn on another dangerous mission because he was too valuable as a national hero to be put at risk. President Kennedy and Robert Kennedy encouraged Glenn to capitalize on his popularity and enter politics. He did and represented Ohio as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate from 1975-1999. This photograph pictures Glenn during training for his long-awaited return to space. 77-year-old Senator John Glenn was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-95), October 29 to November 7, 1998, a nine-day mission during which the seven-person crew supported a variety of research payloads including deployment of the Spartan solar-observing spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform and investigations on space flight and the aging process. The mission was accomplished in 134 Earth orbits, traveling 3.6 million miles in 213 hours and 44 minutes. Fine condition.
