Commemorative Envelope signed: "John Glenn", 6½x3½ envelope. Commemorative envelope honoring NASA's Twentieth Anniversary at which ceremony President Carter presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to six astronauts, 15-cent Viking Missions to Mars stamp affixed, postmarked Cape Canaveral, FL, October , 1978. On February 20, 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth (three orbits in four hours and 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John H. Glenn, Jr. of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging process. His return to space is commemorated on a 33-cent U.S. stamp issued in 2000. Glenn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1999 after serving 24 years. Lightly worn at corners. Fine condition.
