JOHN GLENN
First American to orbit the Earth and oldest man in space.
Envelope inscribed and signed: "To Axelrod-/John Glenn". Countersigned: "Viola L. Armstrong" and "S.K. Armstrong" (parents of Neil A. Armstrong, Apollo 11 Astronaut, First Man on the Moon). Commemorative envelope honoring "Ohio's Famous First" (mentioning Glenn and Armstrong on the cachet), 10-cent First Man on the Moon stamp affixed, postmarked Wapakoneta, OH, November 4, 1969 HOMETOWN OF/NEIL ARMSTRONG/FIRST MAN ON MOON. On February 20, 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth (three orbits in four hours and 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John H. Glenn, Jr. of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging process. His return to space is commemorated on a 33-cent U.S. stamp issued in 2000. Glenn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1999 after serving 24 years. Fine condition.
