Magazine Photograph signed: "John Glenn". Color, 7¾x4¼. This photograph was taken during the ceremony at Cape Canaveral, February 23, 1962, at which John Glenn was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal by President John F. Kennedy. Three days earlier, on February 20, 1962, Glenn had become the first American to orbit the Earth. Aboard Friendship 7, Glenn completed three orbits in 88 minutes and 29 seconds, traveling 75,679 statute miles. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John H. Glenn, Jr. of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging process. His return to space is commemorated on a 33-cent U.S. stamp issued in 2000. Glenn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1999 after serving 24 years. Fine condition.
