JOHN GLENN
John Glenn signs a telegram from April 19, 1983 announcing that he will be announcing his running for the presidency on April 21.
Telegram signed: "John Glenn" as U.S. Senator. 1p, 7½x8½. No place, date stamped 1983 April 19. To Len Rosenthal, Atlantic City, NJ. In part: "On April 21st I will formally announce that I am a candidate for the presidency of the United States. Because of the important role you play in our nation's political life, I wanted to let you know in advance...With your support we can alter the course set by the Reagan administration...Please join me in this historic effort. Thank you." On February 20, 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth (three orbits in four hours and 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John H. Glenn, Jr. of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging process. His return to space is commemorated on a 33-cent U.S. stamp issued in 2000. Glenn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1999 after serving 24 years. Fold creases not at signature. Fine condition.
