JOHN GLENN
First American to orbit the Earth and oldest man in space.
TLS: "John Glenn" as Lt Colonel, USMC. 1p, 8x10½. Houston, TX, 1964 January 15. To Mr. B.G. MacNabb, General Dynamics Corp. In full: "Better late than never - and in winding up some of my affairs here, I finally got the cards you wanted. Hope they are satisfactory, and I'll be in touch one of these days. If you have an extra one of those souvenirs, I would also like to have one. Thanks a lot, and I'll be seeing you one of these days." On February 20, 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth (three orbits in four hours and 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John H. Glenn, Jr. of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging process. His return to space is commemorated on a 33-cent U.S. stamp issued in 2000. Glenn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1999 after serving 24 years. Horizontal folds not affecting signature. Slightly soiled at folds. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
