His children chose the name of his Mercury spacecraft.
TLS: "J.H. Glenn, Jr.", 1p, 8x10½. NASA, 1964 January 15. To Philip Primack, Haverhill, Mass. In full: "In going through some correspondence that had been misplaced, I came across your letter; and I must apologize for my delay in writing to you. In answer to your question, the name of my spacecraft, 'Friendship 7', was carefully selected by my two children to represent a desire for friendship throughout the world. Best regards to you, Philip, and thank you for writing to me." Written on Glenn's rare personal NASA stationery with letterhead imprinted: "John H. Glenn, Jr. Mercury Astronaut/Lieutenant Colonel, U.S.M.C. Friendship 7". On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth (three orbits, 4 hours 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John Glenn of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (134 orbits over nine days). The 77-year-old's presence on the mission enabled scientists to study the effects of space on the aging process. Fine condition.
