Typed Letter Signed: "John Glenn" as Senator, 1p,
8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1980 February 11. To Dr. Herman R. Goldberg,
U.S. Office of Education, Washington, D.C. In full: "Kathleen
Connolly, of my staff, has informed me of your interest in the post of Assistant
Secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitation Services with the new
Department of Education. Your background and experience are indeed impressive,
and I am confident you would be a credit to the new Department. In this regard,
I have taken the liberty of forwarding your materials, with my strong
recommendation on your behalf, to Mr. Frank Moore, Director of Congressional
Relations at the White House. Mr. Moore will see to it that your application
receives serious consideration from the proper office. I am happy to be of
assistance to you, and I hope we can continue working together. Best
regards." On February 20, 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit
the Earth (three orbits in four hours and 55 minutes) aboard Friendship
7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later, U.S. Senator John H. Glenn,
Jr. of Ohio returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery,
spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence
on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging
process. His return to space is commemorated on a 33-cent U.S. stamp issued in
2000. Glenn retired from the U.S. Senate in 1999 after serving 24 years. Fold
creases not near signature. Paper clip impression at upper left. Fine
