JOHN GLENN
He invites a Commissioner to his workshop.
TLS: "John Glenn" as U.S. Senator from Ohio, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1980 March 26. To Dr. Herman Goldberg, Associate Commissioner for State and Local Educational Programs, Washington, D.C. In part: "This is to confirm your participation in my annual Washington Workshop on April 23-25, 1980. I believe that a program of this nature is very timely as we enter times of tighter fiscal responsibility. I anticipate an excellent exchange of new information and I'm so pleased that you will be able to participate...." On February 20, 1962, Colonel John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. He resigned from NASA in 1964 and from the Marine Corps in 1965. At that time, Glenn turned his attention to politics, running for Senator of Ohio in 1964 and 1970. An injury forced him to withdraw from the race in 1964; in 1970, he lost the Ohio Democratic nomination to Howard Metzenbaum. Glenn was elected in 1976 and was reelected in 1982, 1988 and 1994. In 1998, at the age of 78, he returned to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery. Lightly creased. Horizontal fold touches signature. Fine condition.
