JOHN GLENN
John Glenn types a letter about his Mercury flight and his entry into politics.
Early Typed Letter Signed: "J.H. Glenn, Jr." as Colonel, USMC (Ret.), NASA Astronaut, 1p, 8½x11. Seabrook, Texas, 1965 June 5. To Mrs. J. Ross Lebold, Springfield, Ohio. In full: "Thank you for your recent letter in which you remarked about my flight three years ago and also my entry into politics for Senator in Ohio. It is always nice to receive letters such as yours and I do appreciate your very kind words of encouragement. I am very sorry to hear that your sight is failing, but your letter certainly did not show it. I wish I could write as clearly as you. Again, thank you for your very nice letter and my best wishes to you." Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth (Freedom 7 Mercury capsule, three orbits, five hours and 55 minutes, February 20, 1962). Glenn had been a candidate for the 1964 Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate from Ohiobefore falling andhitting his head. Glenn fully recovered but the fall put his political aspirations on hold.In 1974, John Glenn won in a landslide in the November election, more than doubling the votes the Republican candidate received. Glenn, reelected in 1980, 1986 and 1992, decided not to seek reelection in 1998 after serving in the U.S. Senate for 24 years. On October 29, 1998, at the age of 77, he returned to space on the nine-day flight of Space Shuttle Discovery. Fine condition.
