7¼x10½. On his personal Senate letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1985
December 12. To Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Washington, D.C. In
full: "Many thanks for the very delicious New York wildflower honey you
recently sent to my office. It was a very kind gesture, and your thoughtfulness
is appreciated. Annie and I sincerely wish you and your family a very joyous
holiday season. Best regards. Sincerely," Postscript in Glenn's hand:
"Excellent! Many thanks". On February 20, 1962, John H. Glenn,
Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. Aboard Friendship
7, the 40-year-old Mercury astronaut completed three orbits in 88 minutes
and 29 seconds, traveling 75,679 statute miles. Over 36 years later,
77-year-old Senator Glenn was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery
(STS-95), October 29 to November 7, 1998, a nine-day mission during which
the seven-person crew supported a variety of research payloads including
investigations on space flight and the aging process. Glenn served four terms
as a Democratic Senator from Ohio (1975-1999) and sought his Party's
Presidential nomination in 1984. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL
PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate
as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in
the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford".
