Annie and I sincerely wish you and your family a very joyous holiday season. Best regards. Sincerely," Postscript in Glenn's hand: "Excellent! Many thanks". On February 20, 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. Aboard Friendship 7, the 40-year-old Mercury astronaut completed three orbits in 88 minutes and 29 seconds, traveling 75,679 statute miles. Over 36 years later, 77-year-old Senator Glenn was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-95), October 29 to November 7, 1998, a nine-day mission during which the seven-person crew supported a variety of research payloads including investigations on space flight and the aging process.
