John Glenn sends a typed letter of thanks for the book Secrecy: The American Experience.
TLS: "John" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 7¼x10½. Washington, D.C., 1998 December 29. On his personal Senate stationery to New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. In full: "Many thanks for sending me a copy of your book Secrecy. Your thoughtfulness in sharing your ideas on matters of importance to the country has always meant a great deal to me. Best regards." Glenn has handwritten "Pat" over the typed "Pat" in the salutation and added, in holograph: "Many thanks, Pat". Moynihan's book, Secrecy: The American Experience, was published in December 1998. MOYNIHAN, a prolific author, represented New York in the Senate from 1977-2001. GLENN represented Ohio in the Senate from 1975-1999. On February 20, 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth (three orbits in four hours and 55 minutes) aboard Friendship 7. On October 29, 1998, 36 years later and just two months before writing this letter, Senator Glenn returned to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, spending nine days and orbiting the Earth 134 times. The 77-year-old's presence on the mission helped scientists study the effects of space on the aging process. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN.
