JOHN GLENN
John Glenn signs a typescript of his eulogy of Robert
Kennedy.
Typescript signed: "Best regards-/John Glenn", 5p, 8½x11.
John Glenn's eulogy of Robert Kennedy. Astronaut John Glenn's eulogy of
Robert F. Kennedy began and ended with quotes from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
In part: "Perhaps Robert Kennedy saw much of himself in these words by
Emerson. His life's commitment was indeed an 'appeal to a tardy justice.' He
sought to dream possible dreams once thought impossible, and 'to strive, to
seek, to find, and not to yield,' as Tennyson wrote...." The funeral mass was held
at New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral on June 8, 1968. That evening,
Senator Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery near President
Kennedy's grave. The brief graveside service was conducted by Terence Cardinal
Cooke, Archbishop of New York. Afterward, the folded flag was presented to
his widow Ethel and eldest son Joe on behalf of the United States by John Glenn,
one of the 13 pallbearers. Six years earlier, in 1962, John Glenn had become
the first American to orbit the Earth. Staple holes at upper left. Fine
condition.
