Kennedy's Statement, February 20, 1962 re: America's first manned space
flight. In part: "I know that I express the great happiness and
thanksgiving of all of us that Colonel Glenn has completed his trip...We have a
long way to go in this space rate. We started late. But this is the new ocean,
and I believe the United States must sail on it and be in a position second to
none. Some months ago I said that I hoped every American would serve his
country. Today Colonel Glenn served his, and we all express our thanks to
him." Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth,
February 20, 1962, returning to space at the age of 77 on
October 29, 1998, on the nine-day flight of Space Shuttle
Discovery. Usual black marks from photocopying. Light haloing of ink at
