JOHN GOULD FLETCHER
He'll be pleased to write an introduction, at the fees he stipulates in the letter, and would prefer to see the articles before writing his introduction.
Autograph Letter signed: "John Gould Fletcher", 1 page, 5¼x8¼. No place, 1920 July 8. To Mrs. Y. H. Drennan, Newport, Rhode Island. In full: "I should be pleased to do the introduction you suggest, provided you paid me first. My price is: For introduction of five hundred words, $15. For introduction of one thousand, $25. For introduction of fifteen hundred, $50. I should suggest an introduction of fifteen hundred words, and I should like if possible to see the articles. Please let me know if these terms are agreeable to you. I remain Yours faithfully". John Gould Fletcher (1886-1950) published his first volume of poems, Irradiations: Sand and Spray, in 1915. His early poetry was of the Imagist school, associated with fellow poets Amy Lowell and Ezra Pound. Later, Fletcher turned to a more traditional style of poetry. His later verses are part of the Southern Agrarian genre, rejecting modernity and industrialization. Fletcher's Selected Poems won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939. He wrote an eloquent history of his home state, Arkansas (1947). Subject to depression, he committed suicide by drowning in 1950. Toned. Ink light but legible. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
