Whittier wrote, signed and dated this letter from Danvers, Massachusetts in 1889 to thank the recipient for a note, which enabled him to thank a church club for putting him on his calendar.
Autograph letter signed "John G. Whittier". 1 page, 4¼x6¾, 1 sheet folded. Oak Knoll, Danvers, Massachusetts, March 14, 1889. In full: "Dear Friend I thank thee for thy kind note which gives me the pleasure of thanking the Prospect Ave. Church Club for giving me a place in their calendar. I am cordially thy friend." A staunch abolitionist, Quaker poet Whittier (1807-1892, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts) also wrote pastoral poems, including his masterpiece Snow-Bound (1866), that reflected rugged New England life. Probably best remembered today for his patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, he was once honored with holidays in some New England states. Whittier moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1836.Minor mounting remnant on verso of integral sheet. Lightly toned, soiled, foxed and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
