JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER
American poet John Greenleaf Whittier handwrote, signed and dated this letter of thanks to a friend remembering his birthday from Danvers, Massachusetts in 1886.
Autograph letter signed "John G. Whittier". 1 page, 4¼x7, mounted to a sheet of cardstock. Oak Knoll, Danvers, Massachusetts, Nov. 11, 1886 (dated Quaker-style). In full: "Mr [illegible] Age, illness & hundreds of letters like these which I cannot answer, must [illegible] me from doing more cheer to deign myself, with all good writers, for the friends associated with the, and with heartfelt thanks for remembrance of my birthday. Thy friend". A staunch abolitionist, Quaker poet Whittier (1807-1892, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts) also wrote pastoral poems, including his masterpiece Snow-Bound (1866), that reflected rugged New England life. Probably best remembered today for his patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, he was once honored with holidays in some New England states. Whittier moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1836. Lightly toned and soiled. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally. Otherwise in fine condition.
